After a 15 minute warm-up the computrainer is calibrated and the test is started.The test protocol is a progressive incremental test, starting at 100 Watts and progressing by either 25 or 40 Watts(depending on the cyclists ' ability). Each stage is 5 minutes, allowing for steady state to be obtained in both the blood lactate and heart rate levels.At the end of each stage the heart rate, blood lactate and cyclists ' rating of perceived exertion is recorded. The cyclist continues with the test until they fatigue.In some cases cyclists stop at anaerobic threshold, depending on the circumstances. < /font> < p class = "bodyregular" > < font size = "2" > Val graphs the lactate levels and heart rates versus the power output, and give each subject an indication of their heart rate training zones(see below ) as well an indication of any test - re - test fitness changes that have occurred.Each cyclist receives a copy of their test, plus comments and training recommendations.She talks to them about the sources of error associated with these zones, and then they try the training zones outside on their bike to see if they appear to be accurate. < /font> < p class = "bodyregular" > < font size = "2" > The temperature in the lab versus the temperature and convection riding outdoors may influence the training zones slightly.If the person is fatigued they may not be able to ride hard enough to get into their higher intensity zones(threshold & VO2 max ). Heart rates may fluctuate of to 6 bpm with daily fluctuations; and may increase or decrease over time based on fitness changes and nervous system activation.Val has noticed that the athletes she tests 2 - 3 weeks after their final week usually demonstrate up to a 5 - 10 % increase in heart rate over similar power outputs.This may be due to changes in blood plasma volume and parasympathetic drive due to what she calls the & quot; Couch Potato & quot; effect of finishing their last race of the season and not training for a few weeks !! < /font> < p class = "bodyregular" > & nbsp; < table width = "60%" border = "1" align = "center" cellpadding = "3" cellspacing = "3" bordercolor = "#996600" bgcolor = "#FFCC99" > < tr > < td colspan = "2" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > Training Zone < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" class = "body" > < font size = "2" > Heart rate < /font> < / td > < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < /div> < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < /div> < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > E1 < /font> < / td > < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > EZ aerobic < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > E2 < /font> < / td > < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > Aerobic < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > E3 < /font> < / td > < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > Tempo < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > E4 < /font> < / td > < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > Threshold < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < tr > < td width = "15%" class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > E5 < /font> < / td > < td class = "body" > < div align = "center" > < font size = "2" > VO2 max < /font> < / td > < td > < div align = "center" > < /div> < / tr > < / table > < p > & nbsp; < /p> < / tr > < tr > < td > < p align = "center" > < font size = "2" > < img src = "images/vburkeaddress.gif" width = "229" height = "129" > < br > < /font> < / td > < / tr > < / table > < font size = "2" > < a href = "javascript:parent.close();" > < div align = "center" > close window < / div > < / a > < div align = "center" > < /center> < / font > < / BODY > < / html >
